Noticing that your gums bleed when you brush or floss can be alarming. What are the possible causes of bleeding gums? There are different reasons that gums may start to bleed during brushing, some are temporary and some are of more concern.
If you are worried about your oral health, including bleeding or tender gums, simply make an appointment at Dr. Sachdeva’s Dental Surgery.
Why Do Gums Bleed?
The most common cause of bleeding gums is dental plaque (bacterial deposits) and calculus (tartar) building up where the teeth meet the gums. This causes the gum tissues to become inflamed, which is known as gingivitis. Gingivitis can lead to bad breath as well as gum tenderness and bleeding.
If plaque and calculus continue to accumulate over time, continuing gum inflammation can lead to break down of the normal attachment between the teeth and the gums, causing separation known as “pocket” formation. This can lead to eventual loss of teeth.
There can be other causes for gum tenderness and bleeding. Medications such as blood thinners, among others, can lead to bleeding gums. It is important that your dentist is aware of all medications you take.
A new toothbrush or flossing routine can also cause bleeding. Switching to a firmer toothbrush or changing your flossing routine can cause inflamed or bleeding gums. Often, this kind of bleeding is temporary. But you should still consult with your dentist if you believe either of these are the causes of your soreness or bleeding.
Pregnancy Gingivitis is an often unknown cause of gums bleeding. Some pregnant women experience swollen gums and bleeding during pregnancy. This is because pregnancy alters the body’s response to the bacteria that causes gum disease.
Keeping Gums Healthy
Good dental health habits at home can substantially reduce plaque build up, and head off most gum damage at the pass. So brush and floss regularly. Also visit you dentist twice a year – your dentist can remove any plaque that brushing and flossing can’t.
Symptoms such as tenderness, swelling, or bleeding of the gums mean that you should visit your dentist immediately. If gums are damaged your dentist is your best response. Dr. Sachdeva’s Dental Surgery has safe and effective treatments for all levels of gum damage. Our staff will also help you revisit your brushing and flossing techniques to ensure that you are being most dentally effective at home!
