At this festive time of year, when everything seems happy and joyful, your dental health can be put at risk for several reasons: stress from family, work, and limited time pressures, an increased about of less than healthy holiday food and drink, and weakened will power to resist unhealthy temptations.
Here is a little bit of unsolicited, free advice from Dr. Sachdeva’s Dental Surgery to help your get through December’s dental dangers. Sometimes our behaviour and will power can be influenced just enough to make a difference by hearing a bit of advice and encouragement.
First, remember that sugars and alcohol are major contributors to the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. During the holiday festivities, it’s common to eat and drink way too much of these and endanger oral health. Try to keep the increase to a minimum, as much as possible. Don’t forget that when temptation comes to call at your holiday door.
Second, don’t slack off on your good habits. Keep up the brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Improve your habits by putting together a portable toothbrush packet to brush and floss during the daytime. Rinse your mouth with water after every snack and drink. Go to the gym regularly, or at least, don’t stop going to the gym to help keep fit and healthy and to deal with stress.
Lastly, reach out to the loved ones in your life by being concerned about their dental welfare. Help children to adopt and persist life-long dental homecare habits. Consider that the elderly in your life, especially if they have an infirmity, may need help with dental care but may not be inclined or able to ask for it. Make an early January dental check-up a family tradition by booking appointments in December.
