The modern environment is kaleidoscopic and sometimes confusing. In this hectic world, it can be difficult to enjoy a few minutes of quiet amusements without being interrupted by phone calls, texts, or annoying advertisements.
To offer you a break, the professionals at Dr. Sachdeva’s Dental Surgery are here to give you a break with this short list of dental myths and folk-beliefs. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
Some of the myths that revolve around curing toothaches are more than a bit odd.
-
- One of the best myths is from the middle ages and involves a candle made of sheep suet. “Take a candle of sheep’ suet, some eringo seed being mixed therewith, and burn it as near the tooth as possible, some cold water being held under the candle.
The worms (destroying the tooth) will drop into the water, in order to escape from the heat of the candle.” Utterly ridiculous, but funny even today.
-
- Next, is the myth that alcohol (particularly hard alcohol) can be applied to treat toothache. Alcohol is an antiseptic and an astringent, but it is also likely to irritate the gums, only distracting from the pain. Worse, alcohol is known to have negative effects on general dental health.
An occasional drink or two isn’t likely to do any damage to your dental health, but you are probably better off swallowing your drinks than applying them to your teeth or gums.
- Another final of a NOT recommended myth is that placing an aspirin on a sore tooth is better than swallowing the aspirin. FALSE! Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) can cause swelling in soft tissues, sometimes leading to burns, and also complicate existing dental issues. Aspirin must be swallowed and enter the blood stream in order to attain its analgesic effects.
